A Study on the Measurements of Total Body Fat in Korean Youth

Abstract
Total body fat measurements were performed in 2,132 Korean healthy youth age between 18 and 28 years.
A. In 48 of them anthropometry, densitometry and skinfold thickness measurement were made. Body density was calculated by the following formula: Namely body mass in air (kg) divided by body volume (§¤) of Which measurement was made by means of measuring the volume, of overflowed water as much as body volume. Skinfold thicknesses were measured at two sites (arm, & back). The total body fat was calculated from the equation given by Keys and Brozek.
The data obtained by means of the above methods were as follows:
1. Average body height 167.2¡¾5cm,
Average body weight 58.8¡¾6.1kg,
Average body density calculated 1.059¡¾0.07kg/l,
Average relative body weight 35.1¡¾2.6,
Mean skinfold thickness ; 7.9¡¾1.8mm,
2. Total body fat calculated was 8.9¡¾1.9kg, and % Fat was 15.1¡¾2.1 % of body weight. Total body fat and mean skinfold thickness and relative body weight correlated highly. The coefficients of correlation were:
r=0.772 between skinfold thickness & total body fat,
r=0.763 between relative body weight & total body fat.
Two kinds of regression equations namely regression equation between total body fat and skinfold thickness, regression equation between total body fat and relative body weight (Wt/HtX100) were derived.
The derived regression equations were:
Total body fat(kg)=0.834 (mean skinfold thickness(mm)) +2.162
Total body fat(kg)=0.588 (relative body weight)-10.651
B. In order to observe the possibillity that the relative body weight method can be used in a mass survey, the total body fat of 2,084 youth were calculated by means of skinfold thickness and also relative body weight method respectively using the above regression equations.
The results obtained are summerized as follows:
1. The total body fat and % fat by means of skinfold- thickness were 9.04¡¾1.94Kg, and 15.52¡¾2.83% of body weight respectively.
2. The total body fat and % fat by means of relative body weight were 9.0¡¾0.8kg, and 15.54¡¾2.57% of body weight respectively.
From the above results, it is concluded that the relative body weight method is more simple. and useful in the measurement of total body fat compared with the skinfold thickness method.
